2 Types of Charter Schools in Georgia

Charter

We are often asked if there are different types of charter schools and the answer is yes! The state of Georgia has “Startup Charter Schools” and “Conversion Charter Schools”. Let’s take a look at the differences:

STARTUP CHARTER SCHOOLS: Startup charter schools are typically grouped by their authorizer-locally approved charter schools and state charter commission schools. This type of charter school did not exist prior to becoming a charter school.

  • State Charter Commission School – Approved by the State Board of Education after having been denied by a local school district.
  • Charter System – A local school district that operates under the terms of a charter between the State Board of Education and the local school district. In exchange for some flexibility from certain state rules and regulations, the system is more accountable.

CONVERSION CHARTER SCHOOLS: This type of charter school existed as a traditional public school prior to becoming a charter school. To become a charter school, the traditional public school entered into a charter.

In addition to the above charter schools, there is also a Charter Career Academy to help advance workforce development. This specialized type of charter school is established by a partnership between business, industry, and community stakeholders and can either be Startup or Conversion charter schools.
