What Teachers Really do During the Summer – Part 1

Summer vacation is a time for hard working teachers to recharge and refocus as they prepare for a new school year. But did you know it’s not all about rest and relaxation for many teachers. Here is what your teachers are really doing this summer:

• Assessing Classroom Procedures: Every great teacher knows that having consistent classroom procedures can make or break how your class functions and significantly decrease time that is spent off-task. This is especially true at the beginning of the year when procedures need to be set in place and solidified for the entire year. So teachers will be thinking about things like: bathroom visits, classroom jobs, discipline, morning work, students that finish early, dismissal, homework procedures, sending home graded work, storage of student belongings, trips to the media center, etc…
• Improving Lesson Plans: This summer your teachers will be putting their lesson plans underneath the microscope to determine effectiveness. Does this lesson need more external materials? Does it need to be more exciting? Does it need to be rewritten or restructured? Does it need to be scraped all together? What went right and what went wrong with this lesson?
• New Lesson Plans: The extra hours in summer give teachers the opportunity to find inspiration for new lessons. It gives them time to research new resources and fresh ideas to enhance learning in their classroom. And to spend time on questions like – What is the objective of this lesson? How will I evaluate the effectiveness?
