FAQ: What Makes Charter Schools So Successful?

Charter schools are making a difference

Charter schools are allowed to operate more independently than traditional public schools when it comes to staffing, scheduling, and programming. How does greater flexibility in these key areas correspond to their continued success?

  • Staffing: The typical charter school offers its teaching staff more say in the function of the school than a traditional public school. Teachers may experience more leeway regarding their curriculum and teaching style. Charter administrators can hire the teachers they want—they’re not assigned personnel from the district, or forced to choose from a pool. They can also dismiss ineffective instructors quickly if necessary.
  • Scheduling: Charter schools have the flexibility to search for ways to extend learning time through year-round calendars and the use of block scheduling. If their students need remedial instruction, the school can extend the school day, the school week, or the school year.
  • Curriculum: Charter schools allow teachers the freedom to be more innovative.  A charter school can break up the day to provide students with more time on the core subjects they need most. Charter school teachers have a say in the curriculum they teach and can change materials to meet students’ needs.

While charter schools are held accountable to the same state and federal academic standards as public schools, their flexibility in these areas are allowing them to become some of the top-performing schools in the country.
